Cooking Safety

1. Do not leave cooking food unattended.
2. Leave anything that can catch fire unattended. Such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, dish towels or food packaging.
3. Turn pot handles to the back of the stove.
4. In case of oven fire, quickly turn it off and keep oven door closed.
5. Keep children and pets away from stove.
6. Keep knives out of reach of children.

Deep Frying a Turkey

1. Stay away from the house - Set up the turkey fryer more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away. Never leave unattended.
2. Find flat ground - The oil must be even and steady at all times to ensure safety. Place the fryer on a flat, level surface and carfully gauge the amount of oil needed.
3. Use a thawed and dry turkey - Make sure your thanksgiving turkey is completely thawed and dry. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over. If oil spills from the fryer on the burner, it can cause a fire.
4. Monitor the temp - Use caution when touching the turkey fryer. The lid and handle can become very hot and could cause burns. Also be sure to keep track of the oils temperature as many fryers do not have their own thermostats. 
5. Be prepared - Have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry powder) ready at all times in the event that the oil ignites.

Extinguishing Grease Fires

1. Turn off the heat source! 
2. Remove all oxygen from the source by by smothering the fire with a pot, pan lid or baking sheet.
3. Use baking soda or a dry chemical fire extinguisher if needed.
4. DO NOT use water to extinguish a grease fire.

Firework Safety

Fireworks, both safe and sane as well as aerial displays can be utilized in any safe use except the following:

1. If an individual(s) use of any fireworks in any setting causes a fire to break out; you can and will be held liable for any damages and costs associated with suppression of that fire(s).
2. If you live within 75 feet of an undeveloped lot or property in a residential neighborhood or area, ALL fireworks are banned from use in these areas within a 75-foot proximity of such property.
3. If you live within 200 feet of ANY undeveloped and urban interface area; this is any area that is next to the foothills, large areas of undeveloped property, or agriculture fields. ALL fireworks are banned from use in these areas within a 200-foot proximity of such property.
4. Always have a fire extinguisher and buckets of water available and make sure your smoke detectors are operating properly!!

Holiday Shopping

Shopping Tips

1. Ensure you are aware of your surroundings
2. Don’t carry large amounts of cash
3. Park in well-lit areas
4. Hide all gifts and/or shopping bags in your trunks (especially if you are going from store to store)
5. Lock your vehicle
6. Never leave your wallet/purse in your cart and walk away

Gift Safety at Home

1. Be careful about displaying gifts where they can be seen from outside
2. Install a video doorbell
3. Track packages, require a signature, or provide a secure lock box for deliveries
4. Break down boxes of expensive gifts and put them inside your recycling bin out of site

 Travel Tips 

1. Tell a neighbor or friend you will be gone so they can:
   1. Watch over your house
   2. Feed your pets
   3. Collect mail, newspapers and/or packages
   4. Shovel your driveway
2. Set up a timer for your lights
3. Turn off water at fridge and toilets
4. Store valuables, cash, and car keys in a locked safe
5. Don’t post about your trip online-including countdown, pictures, check-ins, etc. until you are back home. (80% of burglars used social media to find their next target)

 Snow Removal and Keeping Sidewalks Clear

1. Residents are required to remove all vehicles from city streets during a snow storm
2. Property Owners are responsible for keeping all sidewalks along their property free of snow and ice.
3. It is important to keep the area around fire hydrants free of snow. It is the property owners responsibility to clear snow from around fire hydrants in front of their home.
4. State law prohibits owners from depositing snow on city streets. Snow removal from driveways and sidewalks should be shoveled onto the lawns or park strip areas and not onto public streets.  More information can be found on the Snow Removal Page.
