[ARCHIVED] Early Literacy Tip: Talking

ELT talking

Strengthen your child’s reading and writing skills with this early literacy tip: Talking!

Children learn and strengthen their language and conversation skills by speaking and hearing others speak. Respond to your younger kids, even if it’s just baby babble, to help them learn the rhythm of conversation.

Speak to older children as often as you can. Help them connect words and concepts by talking to them about what you are doing throughout the day, pointing out shapes and colors, asking them questions about their actions or their surroundings, and elaborating on the things they say.

Listen to your children as they speak and ask them open-ended questions. You can help expand their vocabulary by using new words every day.

Speaking with your child often will help provide a strong foundation of vocabulary for when they are ready to start reading.
